Tax Day

Posted on April 15, 2013

I know everyone’s pretty busy and stressed today, what with it being both a Monday and Tax Day, so I will keep this short.

I am reminded that in the early 1980s, there was much talk of simplifying the US Tax code, or at least the torturous process that ordinary citizens were subjected to as a sort of horrific Rite of Spring.  It must have been about 1982, the year that the 1040EZ was introduced.

Well, we citizens were less than impressed.  It also didn’t help matters that the economy was just as much in the toilet then as it has been recently, inflation was up, and interest rates were through the roof.

You know how it goes.  Despair is best met with humor.  A joke started making the rounds, in the form of a Xerox copy that you might find on a bulletin board at school, or taped up near the water cooler at work (it was 1982, people!).

It looked like this:

TaxCodeAlas.  Even with the 1040EZ, taxes still don’t seem very simple, and on a day like today it feels like there’s a lot of truth in this tired old joke.
